What are my qualifications?

I started piano at age 6, participating in California’s rigorous Certificate of Merit program. This involved annual performances, technical routines, and theory tests. I continued lessons until 17 and have been playing for over 28 years. With a background as a high school Spanish teacher, I have extensive teaching experience and training in pedagogy and developmental psychology. I began teaching piano in 2018, regularly play organ in church, and enjoy helping students overcome learning challenges.

What do you teach the students?

I tailor lessons to meet your child’s goals, whether it’s basic music reading or advanced skills like scales, chords, or playing by ear. I emphasize music theory, which can be beneficial for long-term learning. We cover various music genres, starting with folk tunes for beginners and incorporating classical pieces for intermediate to advanced students.

How much do you charge?

I charge $20 for a half-hour lesson. For younger children, we adapt to their attention span while maintaining the session’s value. Discounts for multiple children can be discussed.

Do you have recitals?

Yes, I host a Spring and a Winter Recital. Dates will be communicated based on student availability.

How much should a student practice?

Intermediate to advanced students should practice as needed to improve weekly. Beginners should practice 4-5 times a week for 20-30 minutes, ideally with parental supervision.

How and when do I pay?

Payments can be made via cash, check, Venmo or PayPal. Invoices and receipts can be provided upon request. You may pay weekly or pay the month’s tuition up front.

How often are lessons?

Lessons are weekly, four times a month. If there are five lessons in a month, you can skip the last one or include it for an additional charge.

Which books do I need to buy for my child?

Students typically need the lesson, technique, performance, and theory books of either Piano Adventures or Alfred’s Basic Piano Course, costing $35-$40 in total. Advanced students will use a classical curriculum tailored to their progress. I can purchase books on your behalf and invoice you, if preferred. Students should also have a blank notebook or a folder dedicated to class notes and handouts in order for me to track what needs to be worked for the week.
